B. Die Pair-Specific Comments

Care should be taken to differentiate BUC-228 from a new, related die pair, BUC-228A. BUC-228A couples the obverse of 228 coupled with a reverse (R228A) not seen in any other die pair. Interestingly, BANK is repunched in both reverse dies (R220 and R228A) in a similar (though not identical) manner. The best way to distinguish the two reverses is by the TOKEN. On R220 the N is repunched in lowish relief, allowing one to easily see the ragged upper left corner of the original N, whereas on R228A the N is repunched in full relief, obscuring the original corner.

Special Comments:

In UPPER the U is repunched low, so the new right serif on the left leg top is lower than the rest of the leg top.

In UPPER the Ps are repunched in slightly lower relief in a new font with the UL serif of the Ps tapers (in the original font they were parallel). So, the new serifs show where the original Ps were broken.

In UPPER the E is repunched in slightly lower relief than the original broken letter. Thus, the upper crossbar of the new letter shows where that part of the original letter was missing.

In CANADA the N is repunched in low relief in a new font with very thin serifs. The thin serifs of the new font show in the areas where the N had broken: the upper left serif and left top of the R leg.

In the date the 1850 is triple punched, with the tripling showing on the inside, especially along the right side.
